Some things are not built.
They are uncovered.
I used to think becoming myself
meant adding something.
More confidence.
More discipline.
More courage.
More certainty.
But lately,
I have begun to wonder
if the journey is actually the opposite.
Perhaps becoming the person God created us to be
is less about adding…
and more about peeling away.
The expectations we quietly accepted.
The roles we learned to play.
The voices that told us
who we should become.
Layer by layer,
we wear them so long
that eventually
they begin to feel like us.
Until one day, something no longer fits.
Not because we have failed.
But because we have grown.
There is a strange kind of grief
that comes with laying down
a version of yourself
that other people understood.
The dependable one.
The productive one.
The one who always said yes.
The one who believed
that worth could be earned.
Letting go of those layers
can feel frightening.
Not because they were true…
but because they were familiar.
And underneath them,
we discover someone
a little quieter.
A little freer.
Someone who notices beauty.
Who delights in creating.
Who values peace
more than proving.
Who no longer needs to become
someone impressive.
Only someone honest.
I don’t think God is asking us
to become someone else.
I think He is patiently
removing everything
that was never really us.
The journey toward wholeness
is not a construction project.
It is an uncovering.
Perhaps that is why
it sometimes feels so vulnerable.
Because what God reveals
is not a polished version
of ourselves.
It is our truest one.
And maybe…
that person has been there
all along.
Waiting beneath the layers.
What expectation might you gently lay down today, making room for the person God has always known?
